Malta to join EPC

Malta will become the 32nd state to join the European Patent Convention on Thursday (1 March), as reported here.

The IPKat welcomes this new member to the European patent club, and wonders what took it so long.

And here. Just so we all know.

By the way, apologies for the inadvertent copying of the linked piece to email subscribers. Kats sometimes tend to be a bit click-happy.

Since it's now the 1 March, the EPO have announced Malta's accession officially in a press release. The EPO interestingly state:

"European patents are therefore valid in 37 countries and reach a market of about 560 million people"

This is true, but only if the applicant pays for the required translations in each country, which very few applicants can afford.
